Ottawa is about 50 miles southwest of our Shawnee shop, the Franklin County seat on the Marais des Cygnes River, and the farm and pasture ground around it is classic pond country. Most properties we see here want water for cattle, a place to fish, or a way to catch runoff from rolling fields.

We size the pond to the land that drains into it so it stays full through dry spells without overtopping in storms. Before digging, we check the soil, since a pond only holds water if the ground beneath it will seal. Then we clear trees and brush, strip the topsoil, dig and shape the basin, compact the dam and set a spillway. If we hit limestone, which is common in this part of Kansas, our rock breaker handles it on site.
