Pond Excavation in Tonganoxie, KS

Tonganoxie is about 25 miles northwest of our Shawnee shop in some of the hilliest country in Leavenworth County, and those wooded draws running toward Stranger Creek make natural pond sites. A dam across the right draw can create a deep, good-looking pond without moving an enormous amount of dirt.

The tradeoff with hilly ground is that more water can rush in during a storm, so the spillway matters. We size the overflow for the drainage above the pond and build it so water leaves without eroding the dam. Before digging, we check the soil for enough clay to hold water, then clear the site, dig the basin, and build the dam in compacted layers.
